My primary concern with biblical interpretation beyond academia is how harmful interpretations have negatively impacted many people. Evangelicals frequently advocate for a selective literalism, hypocritically ignoring passages that critique them. They also lack understanding in reading the Bible by its specific genres, treating every text uniformly rather than recognising the distinct approach required for each genre. Instead of acknowledging these differences, many interpret the Bible as they would the New York Times, albeit attributing authorship to God. They overlook that wisdom literature never uses the phrase ‘thus says the Lord,’ as seen in the prophets and Torah; instead, it often states, ‘thus says the man.’ The fool interprets Proverbs, proclaiming, ‘God says…’ They quote the Bible out of literary and historical context. They cite the Bible without considering its literary and historical context. Thus, some of my blogs aim to rectify these perilous interpretations.
After the nature of PEMSS, other blogs will emphasize the reality that we inhabit our bodies and must nourish and exercise them to achieve optimal results. Additional entries will address the complexity of emotions, viewing them as essential guides that direct our thoughts towards the right path. Naturally, the ways we think and understand prompt me to explore philosophy and critical thinking in my blogs. Of course, we cannot ignore the social matrix and spiritual realm; we must enlighten people correctly to remedy widespread misconceptions.
Lastly, the political landscape has deteriorated into a realm of toxicity and ignorance. Individuals blindly follow figures like Donald Trump, while dismissing the expertise of professionals in their respective fields. Furthermore, many have been tormented by playground bullies who, upon reaching adulthood, bypassed higher education yet retained their limited intellectual capabilities, morphing into either ignorant, know-it-all pastors or political demagogues. This situation compels individuals to seek refuge from such adult bullies, necessitating guidance on how to protect themselves through eloquent language and knowledge.
