Can evil quench evil
without the subject enacting evil?
Only love spawns love
good begetting good
miscreant designs
breeding only nefarious acts.
How can one love
when his or her deeds
embroil the mire of
an eye for an eye
a tooth for a tooth
and guns against guns?
Can acts of love
pull a trigger
launch a bomb
bear a knife
shed blood
for the sake of love alone?
How can hate
overcome hate
or supercilious deeds
transform the haughty
when poison cannot
detoxify poison?
Corruption cannot snuff out corruption
without having its own evil design
but ardor engenders ardor
excellence propagates excellence
just as evil designs evil
after all love has departed.
Can violence bring about peace
anymore than terrorism give life?
Heart to heart
and soul to soul
peace begins in the recesses
of all pure human hearts.
